Restaurant

L'Absolu, Auros
www.restaurant-absolu.com

The restaurant in the village is within walking distance from us (500m) it has been completely refurbished, at the rear of the restaurant there is a pleasant terrace where you can enjoy your meal in the open air.

The chef is very well known in the region and the restaurant attracts clients from all over the Gironde, we therefore advise that you make a reservation should you wish to eat at weekends, particularly Sunday Lunch.

If you log onto the web site above, you will find some of the menus translated into English.  The midday menu is changed daily, there are set menus for the evenings and at weekends and of course the A la carte menu.  There is an extensive wine list with a very good selection of wines from the local chateaux, most of which offer wine tasting should you find one to your liking.

The dining rooms are light and airy and furnished to compliment the original features of the building, if you are here early in the year or in the autumn there will be a welcoming fire in the old chimney.

If you are a fan of Rick Stein and enjoyed his French Odyssey series on BBC television you may be interested to learn that two of the restaurants he raved over are in this region.

Bistrot Saint Jean

The Bistrot Saint Jean can be found in the square at Bazas opposite the Cathedral, they are open at midday and in the evenings Friday and Saturday. There are a couple of photos of Rick Stein with the crew and the patron of the restaurant on the wall.

They obviously specialise in dishes of the Bazas beef but also have quite a varied menu to suit all tastes.  Their plat du jour consists of two very good courses of typical French country cooking at about €10.

La Tupina

The other one is La Tupina which is situated in the rue Porte de la Monnaie in Bordeaux, which he particularly liked because, and I quote from his book of the series

"all the cotes de boeuf, sirloin and rump steaks are grilled on a wood fire set in a vast open hearth, they not only cook steaks there, they also roast joints and game on rotating spits driven by clockwork-motor weights and pulleys, which would give a skip to any boy’s heart"

We would imagine that before you pay a visit to these restaurants it may be wise to book in advance.

Log on to their web site and take the reality tour and feel your mouth begin to water way before you reach the end.  www.latupina.com
